The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is a non-profit membership organisation and the voice of sustainable hydropower.
Since we were founded a quarter of a century ago, the hydropower sector has seen tremendous growth – more than doubling in size to over 1,300 GW today. But even this is not enough to meet the carbon reduction targets set in the Paris Agreement.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has predicted that, by 2050, worldwide hydropower installed capacity will need to reach 2,150 GW.
As an association, we believe that all new hydropower projects should be developed and operated responsibly, and sustainably.
Advancing sustainable hydropower
IHA's mission is to advance sustainable hydropower by building and sharing knowledge on its role in renewable energy systems, responsible freshwater management and climate change solutions.
We seek to deliver on our mission through advocacy, research and policy initiatives and championing sustainable good practices.
Our work programmes and membership services are supported by IHA Central Office, based in London, UK.
The staff team works closely with IHA members, partner organisations, international working groups and networks to deliver on strategic priorities set by the IHA Board.
IHA is the operating name of International Hydropower Association Limited, a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee incorporated in England (number 8656160).
